Driving cloud modernization, operational excellence and cost optimization through managed cloud operations
HCLTech helped modernize cloud operations and establish a standardized cloud operating model aligned with AWS MSP best practices for a leading gas distribution operator in the United Kingdom, delivering energy to more than 11 million homes and businesses. Operating national critical infrastructure, the client manages large-scale IT environments with stringent requirements for availability, security, compliance and cost efficiency. Cloud platforms form a critical foundation for enabling scalability, resilience and long-term digital transformation objectives.
The Challenge
As the cloud environment scaled across multiple platforms, the customer faced increasing complexity in managing infrastructure, applications and enterprise platforms. Challenges included the lack of standardized automation, rising cloud operating costs, fragmented monitoring tools and the need to meet strict regulatory, security and availability requirements for critical services.
The Objective
The customer sought to establish a standardized and mature cloud operating model aligned with AWS MSP best practices. The objectives included modernizing cloud operations, improving operational efficiency through automation, strengthening security and compliance, optimizing cloud costs and ensuring high availability for business-critical workloads.
The Solution
HCLTech delivered an end-to-end managed cloud operations engagement encompassing modernization, automation, migration enablement, operations and continuous optimization.
- Cloud operations and modernization: HCLTech provided comprehensive operating system management for Windows and Linux environments, enterprise-grade backup management and cloud foundation services including provisioning, configuration and lifecycle management. Application modernization was enabled through adoption of PaaS services, container orchestration using AWS Fargate and serverless architecture using AWS Lambda for event-driven workloads
- Infrastructure as Code and automation: Automated provisioning and configuration management was implemented using AWS CloudFormation, Terraform, Ansible and IDNA. Commonly used cloud resources such as Amazon EC2 and Amazon RDS were standardized through Infrastructure as Code, improving speed, consistency and governance. AI-powered runbook automation reduced manual operational effort and improved mean time to resolution
- Observability and intelligent operations: An integrated monitoring and observability landscape was deployed using AI-driven and predictive monitoring tools. This enabled proactive issue detection, intelligent alert correlation, application performance visibility and operational insights. Automated patching and maintenance were implemented using AWS Systems Manager
- Enterprise and SAP platform support: HCLTech delivered specialized managed services for enterprise and SAP environments, including SAP Basis operations and SUSE operating system upgrades. Platform modernization initiatives improved resilience, performance and long-term supportability
- Security, compliance and governance: The solution incorporated more than 50 security and compliance controls aligned with regulatory requirements. Continuous monitoring, automated controls and governance frameworks strengthened the overall security posture and audit readiness
The Impact
- Reduced monthly cloud hosting costs from approximately USD 1M to approximately USD 400K through year-over-year FinOps optimization
- Achieved 99.9% availability for critical cloud and enterprise workloads
- Improved operational efficiency through automation, AI-driven observability and predictive monitoring
- Enabled faster and standardized provisioning through Infrastructure as Code
- Strengthened security posture and compliance through implementation of more than 50 automated controls
